Gulum is an applied statistical geneticist, focused on designing and executing analyses across therapeutic areas.
Prior to joining Foresite Capital, Gulum was a senior scientist in the clinical pharmacogenomics group at Merck, where she was responsible for managing and executing genetic association studies of drug response and pharmacokinetic variability. During the same time, she also served as a genomics data analyst within the cardiovascular medicine department at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, conducting genome-wide association studies of eicosanoid measures in the Framingham population. Gulum came to Merck after postdoctoral positions at Northwestern University and Massachusetts General Hospital, studying genetic factors underlying cardiometabolic traits.
Gulum holds a B.S. in molecular biology from Bogazici University, and a Ph.D. in human genetics from the University of Chicago with a dissertation focusing on genetic mapping studies of cardiovascular and reproductive phenotypes in the Hutterite population, for which she received an American Heart Association fellowship.
